Vision Statement: Visualizing Literacy for All

Russell County Schools’ Literacy Mission:

We want all our children to become competent readers and writers who persevere at reaching their full potential. We will achieve this in all classrooms through the utilization of explicit, direct instruction in the five pillars of literacy (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension) while supporting and actively engaging all children in oral language, reading, and writing.

Teachers in Russell County Public Schools will collaborate with their grade level, school, and division teams in a positive, respectful manner through frequent and regularly scheduled conversations that involve reflecting on our practice and problem-solving our children’s learning needs. The focal points of these conversations will include:

• meeting the needs of all children

• increasing our knowledge and skill set in the science of reading

• following the data that drives the instruction (VALLS, core curriculum data,

  progress reports)

• maintaining fidelity to the science of reading based core curriculum

• providing flexible, small group targeted instruction

• creating an engaging and rich oral language learning environment

• sharing classroom management and strategies for their literacy rich classroom

  environment

• discussing with honesty and openness any struggles

• including and engaging families in their child’s literacy development
